Manufacture and use of technology are causing a negative impact on the environment. There is a need to reduce the technological impacts on the environment and make people aware to lead a sustainable life. It has never been easy for people to understand what activities damage the environment, to what extent and how to reduce their digital footprint.
PROBLEM
Create awareness among people to reduce the impacts of manufacture and consumption of technology consumption on the environment.
SOLUTION
An app that educates people about the impacts of technology consumption on the environment and encourages people to promote sustainable living.

Digging into the problem
INTERVIEWS
42 in total
11 Tech employees
27 Tech consumers
4 Environmental engineers
SURVEYS
A survey was rolled out on social media and among students at University of Florida. We received 53 responses in total.
MARKET RESEARCH
Research about the subject on the internet to find competitors and statistical data.
To discover the problem, I did a thematic analysis of the interview data. I started reading the interview transcripts and grouped data into categories to identify themes. Later, I created an affinity map to distinguish themes and specify needs.
"There is only one perspective to have about environment you know, it has to be at the centre. You can't really go about everyday life without consuming some form of technology. The best you can do as a consumer is to try and learn how you can minimize the effect it has on the environment." -Quote from a user interview

Ideation
With an idea of what the users need, I started conducting a few brainstorming sessions with the team, used brainstorming tools to come up with ideas on how to encourage people to use the app. How can we encourage users to learn? How can we keep them engaged in the long term? How can we motivate people to use the app and become environmentally friendly?
Our key ideas were as follows:
•To encourage people to use this app, users will be provided with incentives. Users can earn points to get coupons and discounts on their purchases. The different ways in which users can earn points are listed below:
•Watching learning videos
•Solving daily puzzles
•Completing surveys
•Uploading pictures of environmentally friendly purchases (eg: receipts of biodegradable plates, etc.)
•Users can earn badges for the number of points earned and share them on social media platforms- just like you share a certification on Linkedin. There will be different levels of badges and each level will be eligible for appropriate coupons. The top 10% will earn the G.O.A.T(Greenest of All Time) badge and the users will have to maintain the status to keep availing special benefits. This is for user engagement and retention.
Concept testing and feedback
We created a mid-fidelity prototype of our initial ideas. To test our hypothesis, we had users use the prototype and fill out a feedback form. We learned that ~70% of participants were motivated to use the app for incentives. Eventhough a similar app exists, 95% of participants said that they have not used a similar app before. Most participants like the badge feature and GOAT system although, some mentioned that they would like to have a few more levels apart from GOAT. A good 86% of the participants felt that this app was useful.
